Abstract

901,786. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. EASTWOOD PLASTICS Ltd. Sept. 19, 1960 [Nov. 26, 1959], No. 40182/69. Class 42 (1). A method of forming the final closure seam between sheets or sheet portions 10, 11 of weldable material forming a hollow inflatable article comprises providing a " folded return strip " along the edge margin of one sheet or sheet portion 11; superimposing the other sheet or sheet portion 10 upon the sheet 11 so that edge of the sheet 10 and the " return strip " overlap; interposing a non-weldable barrier strip 16, in the angle formed by the " folded return strip," between the sheets 10, 11; and applying this assembly between electrodes of a welding-machine, the barrier strip 16 preventing the surfaces separated thereby from being welded together. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 the " return strip " is formed by the margin 14 of the sheet 11. After welding the sheet 11 is folded through 180 degrees and the strip 16 removed. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 3, a separate strip 17 constitutes the " return strip " and the half strip 18 thereof may be welded to the sheet 11 before the strip 16 is inserted or may simply be positioned, one welding operation being sufficient to form the seam. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5, the strip 17 is set inwardly of the edges 12, 13 of the sheets 10, 11, respectively, and an edge-to-edge seam is formed in addition to the overlap seam. The method may be used for forming closure seams in hollow inflatable balls, hoops or liferafts, made of polyvinyl chloride, nylon or glass fibres. The strip 16 may be made of paper.
