Abstract

901,281. Centrifugal casting - machines. STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO. April 5, 1961 [June 3, 1960], No. 12143/61. Class 83 (1). [Also in Group XL (a)] A centrifugal casting machine comprises a rotating mould 2 which supports a hollow shell 1 of the material to be cast, e.g. compacted tungsten powder, and a non-rotating electron gun movable axially relative to the shell and so constructed as to focus electrons into a wheelshaped beam directed on to a narrow ring extending around the inside surface of the shell, the whole being enclosed in a vacuum tank 37. The gun is moved axially by a motor 36 so that adjacent rings of the shell 1 melt and resolidify in succession. In a modification the gun is stationary and the mould is moved axially. In another modification the axis of rotation of the mould is horizontal, the shell is formed by coiling wire in the mould, and additional wire is fed through a tube to the melting zone during casting. In a further modification, additional powder metal is fed to the melting zone. Extracting castings; casting composite articles. The mould may be cut or etched away, or alternatively left in place as a backing.
