Abstract
914,508. Electric die casting apparatus. TITANIUM METALS CORPORATION OF AMERICA. April 14, 1961 [July 15, 1960], No. 13495/61. Class 39 (3). [Also in Group XXII] Apparatus for carrying out a method of die casting (see Group XXII) comprises a vacuum housing 10 composed of a bin 12, injection housing 14, crucible housing 16 and electrode housing 18. Titanium is skull-melted in the copper crucible 70 by a consumable or non- consumable electrode arc, the electrode being automatically raised and lowered by a motor 62, controlled in known manner to maintain the arc, driving screws 28 to raise and lower a cross-head 32. In addition the electrode may be rapidly raised or lowered independently of the cross-head by pneumatic or hydraulic cylinders 36, so that it may be withdrawn quickly from the vicinity of the crucible so that this may be tilted for pouring. The crucible 70 sits in a water-cooled yoke 74 which may be tilted from the exterior of the casing 10 by a cylinder. The charge is poured from the crucible through a graphite funnel 106 into a graphite-lined feed chamber 116, from which it is injected into the two part mould 180, 184 by a piston 120. The dies are closed and clamped by a cylinder 168 acting through a toggle linkage 156, 158, 162, 164. After casting the mould is opened and the casting which normally stays in the fixed mould 180, is ejected by the injection piston 120, falling into the bin 12, wherein it cools in vacuum. When the bin is filled it may be removed on wheels 178 after releasing bolts 176.
