901,184. Moulding flexible diaphragms. SAUNDERS VALVE CO. Ltd. Oct. 30, 1958 [Nov. 8, 1957], No. 34919/57. Class 87(2). A flexible diaphragm or diaphragm facing of polytetrafluoroethylene (p.t.f.e.), of the type used in diaphragm valves and having the head of a stud embedded in an integralboss is made by compacting uniformly distributed granules of p.t.f.e. by pressure between the lower and upper transition temperatures (20‹ and 327‹C. respectively) to form a biscuit, sintering the biscuit above 327‹C. but below the temperature at which decomposition sets in, hot coining the sintered biscuit below 327‹C., and finally quenching the hot coined moulding while it is still under pressure. The initial stage is performed with the apparatus of Fig. 3 comprising a mould 24, a main plunger 25, a second plunger 29 slidable in the cavity 28 in the main plunger, and shoulders 32, 33 for limiting the movement of the two plungers into the mould. The granular material 23 forming that part of the biscuit outside the boss is uniformly distributed by strickling, this and the subsequent compression preferably being carried out at only a little above 20‹C. Sintering should then be effected at, for example, 360‹C. for 90 min., with the biscuit supported in a cradle without being closely confined. Suitable conditions for the coining operation are a temperature of 318‹C. and a pressure of 1 ton/sq. in., using the press shown in Fig. 6. This includes upper and lower dies 41, 43 each with separate cooling jackets 45, 49. The upper die 41 has a separate central part 42 for the final shaping of the boss. It is during this stage that diametral and marginal ribs may be formed on the diaphragm which after being cooled rapidly, e.g. down to 150‹C. in 10 to 15 sec., is removed from the press.
