Abstract

901,072. Vehicle movers. MOVET INDUSTRIES Inc. Oct. 27, 1959 [Oct. 28, 1958], No. 36361/59. Class 79(1). A self-propelled vehicle mover for railway vehicles with flanged wheels comprises a carriage which may be placed beneath a wheel of the rail vehicle to be moved, the carriage having jacking members for raising the vehicle and a member which can cause the vehicle wheel to rotate. The vehicle mover may be operated upon a rail or upon ground engaging wheels. When the vehicle wheel is raised, the vehicle can be moved by driving the raised wheel from the vehicle mover. A one-cylinder internal combustion engine drives a hydraulic pump 40 from which three hydraulic torque booster motors 42 are operated and which are controlled as to speed and direction by means of a belt 44 common thereto and to a speed control and reverse unit 38 which is driven through a belt 36, and the output shaft of which has an overload slip clutch to prevent transmission of excessive torque. The booster motors 42 have a common output member 46 which chain drives a traction shaft 50a mounted in a frame member 52. A further frame member 54 may be moved towards or away 'from the member 52 by a pair of hydraulic cylinders 56. A pair of ground engaging wheels 62 may be raised and lowered by hydraulic cylinders 58 which with the cylinders 56 may be operated from a hand pump 64. The device may be moved along a rail 14 independently of the ground wheels with the aid of rollers 78 carried by the frame members 52 and 54, guide rods 74 co-operating with the rail 14 to centre the device. The engine 28 and control unit 38 are controlled through flexible cables 86 from a platform 24 from which the brakes of the vehicle 12 are also controlled. The vehicle wheel 18 may be engaged by members 102 and 104 adjustable to accommodate different sizes of wheel, and rollers 118 carried by the frame members 52 and 54. The front roller 118 is free to turn and the rear roller 118 is fast with the drive shaft 50a for rotation. The frame members 52 and 54 also carry bevel rollers 122 adjustable by means of hand wheels 126 to engage the wheel rim (Fig. 7). The pump 40 supplies the motor 42 on the extreme left of Fig. 11 through conduits 172 and 174 and the other motors in series through check valves 180 and 182. Exhaust fluid is returned through a relief valve 176 and conduit 178. Under low torque conditions the left hand motor consumes all the pressure fluid. Underhigh load conditions the other motors may be operated in parallel through valves 190 and 192 which may be set to operate at different loads. As the torque conditions decrease -the fluid output may be delivered first to all three motors and then to two and one -successively, with corresponding progressive increases of speed. The motors can be put in reverse to act as -a brake. The cylinders 58 which raise and lower the ground wheels 62 are supplied from the manually operated pump 64 through a spool valve 196, Fig. 12, a needle valve 199 being provided to control the flow rate for retraction of the wheels. In the opposite operating position, the cylinders are supplied through check valves 200 .which may be used to lock the wheels in position and which may be opened by application of pressure through the line 202 when the wheels are to be retracted. The cylinders 56 -for moving the frame members 52 and 54 and the associated members 102 and 104 are also -operated from pump 64 but through spool valve 198. The cylinders 56 may be supplied -through check valves 204 to jack up the vehicle wheels, the valves holding the vehicle in the raised position. 'Pressure in line 206 unseats the valves to lower the vehicle and flow rate is controlled by valves 208. In a modification. Fig. 14, an auxiliary rail 224 is attached to the main rail and is engaged by freely rotating rollers 228 on the vehicle mover. Specification 901,073 is referred to.
