Abstract

A polymeric material is made by subjecting an aqueous solution of an hydroxy-carboxylic acid or an amino-carboxylic acid or a substance which under the influence of ionising radiation yields such an acid, to the action of ionising radiation in an oxygen-free atmosphere. Specified starting materials are glycollic acid, lactic acid, gluconic acid, maltobionic acid, g -hydroxy butyric acid, g -hydroxy valeric acid and lactones thereof, lactaldehyde, glucose, maltose, lactose, methyl glycoside, g -hydroxy butyraldehyde, sucrose, starch, cellulose, 2,3-dihydro-g -pyran, the dimer of acrolein, glucosamine, glycine, alanine and phenyl alanine. The examples describe the g -irradiation of aqueous solutions of:- (I) D-glucose; (II) D-gluconic acid 1:4-lactone; (III) DL-lactic acid; (IV) glycollic acid; (V) and (VIII) glycine; (VI) alanine; (VII) phenyl alanine; (IX) to (XIX), (XXIV) and (XXX) glucose; (XXI) glucosamine hydrochloride; (XXII) g -butyrolactone; (XXIII) g -valerolactone; (XXIV) 2,3-dihydro-g -pyran; (XXV) 2,3-dihydro-g -pyran-2-carboxaldehyde. In Examples (XXVI) to (XXXIII) various products are heated with sulphuric or hydrochloric acid, whilst the products of several of the examples from complexes with cetyl trimethylammonium bromide.
