Abstract

900,601. Railway track brakes. SHEEPBRIDGE EQUIPMENT Ltd., and HOPKINS, A. D. July 10, 1959 [May 27, 1958], No. 16938/58. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XXXII] A wheeled vehicle is supported from the wheels by a contractible and expandible structure including a diaphragm-type, fluid-pressure motor which when contracted enables a braking element to engage the track on which the vehicle runs. The vehicle truck body is supported by four-wheeled bogies, each having a frame 10, 11, 14, 25, Fig. 1, supported from axle carriers 15 by adjustable struts 29, 30, 31, attached to springs 26 by straps 28, each axle carrier 15 being mounted on a platform 20 suspended by rods 9 passing through lugs 21 on bogie frame brackets 14 and springs 22 between nuts 24 and lugs 21. Admission of pressure fluid to motors 30, each having a pressure chamber defined by a diaphragm, Figs. 2-7, not shown, causes struts 29, 30, 31 to expand and the wheels 17 to support the truck body; on exhaustion of fluid from the motor, the body forces brake shoes 13, fixed to bogie frame brackets 11, against the track 18 and springs 22 raise the wheels 17, the carrier 15 having guiding flanges 19 co-operating with frame brackets 14. The control system of motors 30 comprises a control valve 73, Fig. 9, which, when pressure prevails in line 80, 74, connects this line to motors 30 via pipes 79 but on exhaustion of pressure in line 80, 74 connects motors 30 to exhaust line 81 leading to reservoir 82. The reservoir 82 is connected to the pressure side of a scavenger pump 84 whose suction side is connected to an exhaust pipe 86 extending throughout the train of vehicles, the pipe 86 being connected to reservoir 82 via one-way valve 87 and to a pressure pump 77 via a pressure release valve 88 and a manually-operated trip valve 89, the pumps 84, 77 being manuallycontrolled from a lever. The suction side of pump 77 is connected to reservoir 82 and the output side to line 80. The brake motors 30 of a rear bogie are connected by pipes 94 to a control valve 73 operating as above and con nected to pressure line 80 and to a surge tank 97 connected to exhaust line 86. The frame 66 of the front truck rests or bogie frame 10, Fig. 8, and is connected thereto by a draw-bar 68 pivoted at 67 to frame 66 and at 71 to frame 10. The rear end of frame 66 rests on rear bogie frame 10 and is connected by another draw-bar 68 to the forward end of the next truck frame.
