Abstract
1,2-Dicyanocyclobutane is prepared by heating acrylonitrile at between 180 and 260 DEG C. under an inert gas pressure of between 10 and 100 atmospheres, for up to 6 hours in the presence of a sulphur compound R1-S-R2 in which R1 and R2 stand for hydrogen and/or an alkyl radical, and/or a metal of Group II to VIII of the Periodic Table, a thioamide e.g. thioacetamide, or a thiocyanate e.g. allyl isothiocyanate. Hydrogen sulphide, mono- or di-alkyl mercaptans, nickel, cobalt, iron, barium or zinc sulphide and tungsten disulphide, and dimethyl sulphoxide which yields formaldehyde and mercaptan on heating are given as examples, and may be used in a proportion of from 0.01 to 1.00% by weight. The unreacted acrylonitrile may be removed by distillation and recycled, and the product a cis-trans mixture redistilled, under vacuum to separate the isomers.
