The inner points of each group of looptransfer points for narrowing and widening on a straight-bar machine are half points and during widening the relationship between these inner points and the needles is such as to effect spreading of the associated loops. During narrowing, however, the relationship is modified so that the half points effectively close the beards of the needles and ensure a complete transfer of the associated loops to adjacent needles in the same way as the normal points. With back racking, therefore, narrowing can be effected down to a particularly narrow width of fabric. The relationship between narrowing and widening can be modified by providing two needle cams one of which serves to maintain a low needle height during widening so that the beards of the needles associated with the half points stay open and the other of which serves to maintain a normal needle height during narrowing whereby the half points effectively close the beards. Alternatively the motion of the narrowing machine can be modified or the position of the half points can be adjusted between a high position for widening and a low position for narrowing.
