Abstract
900,324. Charging and discharging capacitors. EDGERTON, GERMESHAUSEN & GRIER Inc. Aug. 16, 1960 [Sept. 17, 1959], No. 28431/60. Class 38 (4). A circuit for producing flashes of light in a discharge tube 3 comprises a series-connected capacitor bank C1, C7 charged from an A.C. source ABC through a self-excited parallel transductor T1, transformer P1-P3, S1-S3, bridge-connected rectifiers CR9-CR14 and conductors B+, B-. The tube 3 is triggered by another tube 9. By grounding an auxiliary electrode 10 through a switch 5 a capacitor C14 discharges through a primary winding L1, thus a pulse of, say, 15 k.v. is applied to a trigger electrode 4, which together with an additional potential from another secondary winding L3 causes the capacitors 1, 7 to discharge through the tube 3. The capacitor bank voltage is regulated by a circuit comprising a rectifier CR1 such as a Zener diode, a control winding C5 and a potentiometer connected across the capacitor C7, so that when the breakdown voltage of CR1 is exceeded the transductor impedance increases. The time constant of another control winding C4 together with a CR combination C13, R5 connected across capacitors C7 and shown in heavy lines delays the return of the circuit to the normal changing condition for a sufficient time to prevent after burning in the tube 3. The control winding C4 also limits the changing current to a desired rate by being supplied with a voltage from a resistor 16 through a rectifier CR27 and a resistor R17. The charging current is reduced by a switch 5<SP>11</SP> unshunting another resistor R15. If the voltage across capacitors C1 increases above a determined fraction of the bank voltage, a third control winding C3 will reduce the output voltage of the rectifiers CR9-14, a rectifier CR2 preventing a reversal of current in this winding, excessive voltages causing neon tubes V 3 -V 10 to flash over, rapidly reducing the voltage. U.S.A. Specifications 2,478,901, 2,478,902, 2,478,903, 2,478,904, 2,478,905, 2,478,906, 2,478,907, 2,722,629 and 2,756,365 are referred to.
