Abstract
900,083. Making perforated plastic foil. ROSEDALE ASSOCIATED MANUFACTURERS Ltd. Nov. 9, 1960 [Nov. 27, 1959; July 18, 1960], No. 38512/60. Class 87(2). A plastic foil is provided with perforations such as holes or slits and the foil is then stretched in a hot condition and cooled whilst still subjected to the stretching force. A foil 1, Fig. 1, is passed between a cutting roller 2, with interchangeable cutters 3, and a pressure roller 4 with a flexible layer 5, so that the foil is perforated. The foil 1 may be heated by radiation as at 16 or the rollers 2, 4 may be electrically heated. Two rollers provided with cutters may be used. The heated foil is stretched in the direction 9 by a roll pair 11, 11 which runs at a higher (but variable) peripheral speed than the rollers 2, 4. The foil may be cooled in the stretched condition by an air blast as at 17 or the rollers 2, 4 may be water cooled in the case where heating is by radiation at 16. If the cutters produce slits in the foil, Fig. 4 (not shown) these will appear when stretched as the holes 13 in Fig. 5. On leaving the rollers 2, 4 the foil may be turned through 90 degrees in which case, on stretching, the edges 22 of the holes 13 will be displaced from the plane of the foil and this displacement will remain after cooling. The foil may also be stretched laterally, Fig. 12, where the foil 37 is engaged by roller pairs 38, 39 which have roughened surfaces or small hooks to grip the edges of the foil. In a typical process the foil after extrusion is passed through a perforating roll or rolls, which may be wetted with a liquid to prevent sticking of the foil and then to a lateral stretching device. The foil may then be passed, to a colouring bath and further to a longitudinal stretching device and an afterstretching device which may be arranged to stretch the foil to its condition of maximum strength. In modified arrangements the foil may be stretched partly before perforation or subjected to further stretching after cooling.
