Abstract
1,083,847. Perforated and reticulated films. T. J. SMITH & NEPHEW Ltd. Jan. 22, 1965 [Nov. 11, 1963], No. 44405/63. Heading B5B. In a method for forming an openwork net structure, a film of organic thermoplastic material is perforated by heat-assisted means, and then, or subsequently, submitted to biaxial orientation to permanently stretch the film. The film of, e.g. polyester, polypropylene or polyethylene may be perforated by passage between two driven rollers, one of which is provided with radially projecting heated pins, and the other of which has a cushioning surface, and then biaxially stretched on a tenter frame. The perforating pins may be heated by conduction from heating means within the roller, or by radiation from external heaters. The film may also be perforated by acting upon it with a flame while it lies in contact with the surface of an indented roller (Specification 1,012,963). The perforations are preferably arranged in a regular pattern.
