Abstract
1,150,858. Stretching polyvinyl chloride calendered films transversely. UNILEVER Ltd. 30 Nov., 1967 [2 Dec., 1966], No. 54479/67. Heading B5B. A process for forming and transversely stretching polyvinyl chloride films, in a continuous manner, comprises forming the film on a calender in the usual manner and transversely stretching the film immediately after it leaves the discharge roll of the calender, and while still hot from the calender, the temperature of the film during the stretching operation being within a temperature range in which the film material is thermoelastic. The process may be carried out by means of the apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprising a calender 1 of the usual type for making films and a transversestretching device 2 positioned so that its inlet end is immediately adjacent to the discharge roll of the calender 1. The film web 3 formed on the calender 1 is drawn from the discharge roll of the calender immediately or almost immediately into the inlet end of the stretching device 2 in which it is stretched transversely by means of clip chains 4 in the usual manner. Two or more feed or tempering rolls 5 are interposed between the calender and the stretching device being immediately adjacent to the last or discharge roll of the calender and the inlet end of the stretching device. The rolls 5 are adapted to be maintained automatically within a predetermined temperature range and the delivery roll 6 of the stretching device is adapted to be cooled.
