Abstract

900,030. Soot-blowers. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Oct. 14, 1958 [Oct. 14, 1957], No. 32070/57. Class 99(2). In a fluid-heater cleaning system comprising a number of lance-type blowers each having a motor 27 for effecting advance and retraction of the lance 7 and a driving shaft 32 adapted for emergency operation for effecting the retraction of the blower independently of the motor, there is provided a portable, auxiliary motor which has means complementary with each of the blowers whereby the motor may be selectively operatively positioned in relation to any one of the blowers with the output shaft of the motor coupled to the driving shaft of the blower. As shown, each blower, Fig. 1, comprises a telescopic, nozzle tube 7 advanced and retracted on a carriage to and from the operative position, and rotated, by an electric motor 27 and is of substantially the same construction as the soot-blower described in Specification 636,052. The portable, reversible air motor 61, Fig. 6, has a crankshaft 64 geared to a shaft 68 which drives by a duplex chain 70 an output shaft 72 formed with a recess 75. The latter includes a square recess 81 into which fits the squared end portion 50 of the shaft 32. Apertured, laterally-extending lugs 85, Fig. 7, on the boss 74 of the motor casing co-operate with an apertured lug 52 on the casing of the motor 27 and movement of the motor 61 is prevented by insertion of the pin 87 of a member 86 through the lugs; the member includes a tongue 90 adapted to engage within a slot 88 in the shaft 68 so that the square recess 81 and the portion 50 of the shaft 32 can be brought in alignment. In the event of failure of the motor 27 to retract the blower, such retraction is effected by application of the motor 61. Specifications 533,609 and 900,031 also are referred to.
