Abstract
As a non-discolouring antiozonant there is incorporated in rubber a substituted aniline of formula <FORM:0899930/IV (a)/1> where R1 is an aliphatic or an aralkyl group and R2 and R3 are each a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic group, except that when both R2 and R3 are hydrogen atoms the group R1 contains at least 4 carbon atoms, or a salt of such a compound. Examples of the compounds are 4-n-butoxyaniline, 4-isoamyloxyaniline, 4-n-hexyloxyaniline, 4(2-ethylhexyloxy)aniline, 4-n-decyloxyaniline, 4-n-hexadecyloxyaniline, 4(b -ethoxyethoxy)aniline, 2-methyl-4-methoxyaniline, 2-ethyl-4-n-propoxyaniline, 3-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)-4-s-butoxyaniline, 2,6-dimethyl - 4 - methoxyaniline, 2,6 - dimethyl - 4-methoxyaniline, 2,6-dimethyl-4-n-octyloxyaniline, 3-t-butyl-5-methyl-4-ethoxyaniline, 4-isobutyloxyphenylammonium chloride, 3-methyl-4-t-butoxyphenylammonium oxalate, 4-n-tetradecyloxyphenyl trimethylammonium bromide. In general, the concentration is 0,2-3 parts per 100 parts of rubber. Natural rubber, polymers of 1,3-butadiene and copolymers of 1,3-butadiene with styrene, acrylonitrile, isobutylene and methyl methacrylate are referred to. An example is of comparative tests illustrating the antiozonant activity of 4-n-decyloxyaniline in bands of a vulcanized mix of smoked sheets, carbon black, mineral oil, zinc oxide, stearic acid, sulphur and N-cyclohexyl-2-benzthiazyl sulphenamide.
