Abstract

Ethylene-propylene copolymers are reacted with carbon black at 300 DEG to 500 DEG F. for at least a minute. The reaction is preferably effected to 350 DEG to 450 DEG F. for 5 minutes to 2 1/2 hours, and 0,1 to 5% of a curative other than a peroxide cross-linking agent, e.g. sulphur, aromatic nitroso compounds or aromatic oximes, may be present. The products may then be vulcanized in the presence of added curatives. Examples describe the reaction of ethylene-propylene copolymers with carbon black (V) in the presence of (I) stearic acid, (II) para-dinitroso-benzene on clay and stearic acid, and (III and IV) sulphur; and the curing of the products with dicumyl peroxide and sulphur (V) together with (I and II) zinc oxide, (III) para-quinone dioxime, rubber processing oil and stearic acid, and (IV) stearic acid.
