Abstract

Cured elastomeric polyurethanes are produced by the condensation of one or more linear hydroxyl-ended polymers of M.W. 800-5000, one or more organic diisocyanates and optionally a compound of M.W. less than 800 containing two active hydrogen atoms whereby a polyurethane containing 0.5 to 5.0% of uretdione groups is obtained and curing the polyurethane in the presence of sulphur or an organic peroxide. One of the polyurethane precursors may contain olefinic unsaturation, thereby introducing unsaturation either in the polyurethane chain or in pendant groups. The linear hydroxyl polymer may be a polyester, polyether, polythioether or polyacetal. The uretdione groups may be introduced by the use of a diisocyanate containing a uretdione group, e.g. a dimer of tolylene diisocyanate. Fillers, curing accelerators, plasticizing agents, flame proofing agents and antioxidants may be added. In the example a polyester was reacted with tolylene diisocyanate and then dimeric 2:4 tolylene diisocyanate added, the mixture heated and compounded with: carbon black, 2-mercaptobenzthiazole, 2:21-di-(benzthiazyl) disulphide, sulphur, stearic acid, ZnCl2 and heated to cure.
