Abstract
899,755. Making finned tubes for heat exchangers; rolling. HOWELL & CO. Ltd. Jan. 30, 1961 [Jan. 30, 1960], No. 3398/60. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of securing a helical fin on a metal tube comprises forming a helical groove with a ridge on at least one side in the outer surface of the tube, inserting into the groove one edge of a continuous strip and then forcing the ridge inwards against the fin, the outer part of which is supported perpendicularly to the tube by a rolling tool so that the inner edge becomes bent and keyed to the tube. A flat bottomed groove 3 of width equal to the thickness of the fin and ridges 4, 5 are formed in the surface of a tube 1 by a blunt-nosed tool 2. A strip of metal is fed into the groove 3 by a roll 7 which supports it radially and at the same time rolls the ridge 5 across to fill the groove 3 and bend over and anchor the inner edge of the strip to produce a good mechanical and heat conducting joint.
