Abstract
899,678. Oscillating machines. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. June 25, 1959 [July 2, 1958], No. 21132/58. Class 35. An oscillating generator or motor comprises a short-circuited single or multitum coil 6 movable within a constant magnetic field established by D.C. coils 7 and magnetically coupled with A.C. coils 8. These comprise the output windings for a generator, or the input windings for a motor, in which case the coil 6 moves synchronously with the supply and is stated to be self starting. To reduce armature reaction the faces of poles 3 may carry a grid of conductors in slots, or the faces and preferably the sides also may be covered by sheet conducting material. The front and back of the central limb 4 may also be so covered. The iron core is laminated and may be constructed of strips interleaved and bolted (Figs. 4-6, not shown). In one alternative construction (Fig. 3, not shown) the D.C. coils are carried on two U-shaped members, the short-circuited coil is movable between the opposed arms of these members and it encircles the centre limb of a three-limbed frame shaped member arranged at right-angles to the U-members, the outer limbs carrying the A.C. windings. In a second alternative arrangement (not shown), the D.C. windings are on two opposed E-shaped members while those for A.C. are on a two-limbed frameshaped member at right-angles. In the Provisional Specification it is stated that the device may operate as a motor with leading power factor for power factor correction.
