Abstract
899,541. Pipe fittings. COMPRESSION JOINTS Ltd. Feb. 15, 1960 [Feb. 14, 1959], No. 5209/59. Class 99(1). A fitting comprises complementary male and female screw-threaded members 5, 14, a rubber or like resilient sealing ring 11, an axially split, gripping ring 13 having an exterior surface adapted for wedge engagement with a part of the interior surface of the member 14 such that the ring is radially compressed by the engagement of the said surfaces as the members are engaged one with the other, and a compression ring 12 adapted to be located between the rings 11, 13 for imparting axial stress to the ring 11 from the ring 13 as the latter is moved axially towards the sealing ring when the members are being engaged. The member 5 has a twice-stepped bore providing an inner socket 7 having a frusto-conical wall 20 adapted to locate the end of the pipe 8 during assembly of the fitting and to permit some axial movement of the pipe end during the engagement of the members, and an outer recess 10 for the accommodation of the sealing ring and at least a part of the length of the compression ring. As shown, the ring 13 is split and furnished with internal serrations 15 for gripping engagement with the pipe. The latter, when of synthetic plastic or asbestos-cement, is supported internally by a metal liner 21 having an external serrated surface and flared at 22 to abut the shoulder 6 and the ring 13 is lined with felt. According to the Provisional Specification, the rings 11, 12 are replaced by a composite element comprising a resilient ring mounted within a coaxial L-section metal ring.
