Abstract
899,507. Elastic-fluid turbines. WESTING HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Oct. 10, 1960, No. 34699/60. Class 110 (3). In a reversible elastic fluid turbine comprising a casing 16, a pair of opposed flow sections 11, 13 having a common exhaust chamber 15, a common rotor 19 for the sections, means are provided for reducing circulatory fluid losses in one of the sections when the other section is energized, the means comprising an annular shroud structure 32 disposed intermediate the end portions of the stationary blades 24 in one of the sections. The circulatory flow of steam in the driven turbine gives rise to large vortices in known forms of turbine. The shrouds 32, which extend the full axial width of the blades, reduce the size of the vortices, shown by arrows G in Fig. 5. More than one shroud structure may be used with a row of blading and more than one row of blades may be so fitted. Both sections of the turbine may be fitted with the shroud structure if desired.
