899,353. Cosmetic pencils. AVERSA, J. June 27, 1960 [April 22, 1960], No. 22477/60. Class 146(3) A cosmetic pencil comprises a barrel 1, a rear cap 8 having a plug 9 secured therein, a stem 10 extending forwards from the centre of the plug, a spiral crayon feed member 15 disposed in the barrel, a longitudinally extending recess 23 at the rear end of the feed member, a key 24 extending forwards from the plug 9 adjacent to the stem 10 which key enters the recess 23 and connects the feed member 15 to the cap 8 for rotation therewith, there being an annular recess 6 adjacent to the rear end of the barrel and an annular rib 7 in the cap 8 which snaps into the recess 6 and permits rotation of the cap relative to the barrel, a crayon carrier 16 rotatably mounted in the spiral feed member 15, and a colouring crayon (not shown) mounted in the carrier 16. The barrel 1 is composed of a synthetic plastic material, e.g. butyrate, and the cap 8 and feed member 15 consist of a yieldable metal, e.g. brass. The plug 9 and stem 10 are a one-piece zinc diecasting. The carrier 16 has a brass tubular portion 25 carrying a lateral lug 26 and into which the rear end of the crayon is frictionally secured, and a zinc, die-cast ejector rod slidable within the tube 25 and carrying an integral lateral lug 28 which projects through a longitudinal slot 29 in the tube 25. In use the lugs 26, 28 are engaged in adjacent convolutions of the helical slot in the feed member 15 and also in a longitudinal groove 18 in the barrel so that when the cap 8 and feed member 15 are rotated the lead is advanced or retracted. When the lug 26 reaches the front end of the groove 18 further rotation of the cap 8 causes the lug 28 to advance to the front end of the slot 29 so that the end of the crayon held in the tube 25 is ejected. The feed-member 15 is slightly bowed so that it frictionally grips the inner wall of the barrel and resists accidental displacement.
