899,084. Measuring the radio-actiyity of air. MESSEN-JASCHIN, G. A. March 9. 1959 [March 11, 1958], No. 8137/59. Class 40(3). The radio-activity of the air is measured by passing air continuously by means of a fan 3, Fig. 2, through a duct 10 of rectangular cross-section, Fig. 3, having walls of electrically insulating material, causing particles in the air to be deposited electrostatically on a moving flexible metallic strip 4 by means of a transverse electric field produced by longitudinal wire electrodes 11 maintained at a high positive voltage and recording the radio-activity of the particles deposited on the strip 4 by means of counting tubes 9 located adjacent the strip after it has emerged from the duct 10. The strip 4 is fed through the duct 10 from a supply spool 5a to a take-up spool 5b over loose pulleys 7 and a driving pulley 6 and a cover strip 16 is also fed from a supply spool 17 to the take-up spool 5b over the driving pulley 6 to cover the surface of the strip 4 on which the particles have been deposited The electrodes 11 may be backed by a curved reflector 12, Fig. 3, maintained at the same potential as the electrodes 11. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), two separate collecting strips are provided adjacent opposite sides of the duct with the electrodes 11 midway between them.
