Abstract

In the conversion of methylcyclopentane to benzene over a platinum-alumina-halogen catalyst with hydrogen under reforming conditions an amount of ammonia or an amine is added to provide 3-12 parts per million of ammonia based on hydrocarbon. The process may be one of reforming a naphtha at 875 DEG F.-975 DEG F. and 200-600 p.s.i.g. The addition of ammonia as catalyst activity declines results in maintaining the conversion to benzene. Conversions of C7 naphthenes to toluene are unaffected.
