Abstract
Alkyl-benzenes are obtained when cyclooctadienes or alkyl cyclooctadienes are contacted at above 200 DEG C. with a catalyst consisting of or comprising an oxide or sulphide of a metal of Group IIIa, IVa, Va, VIa, VIIa or VIII. The preferred temperature is 400-550 DEG C. and preferably a molar excess of hydrogen is present. Cycloocta-1,5-diene is converted to ethyl benzene over chromium oxide and the product may be converted conventionally to styrene.
