Abstract

898,960. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. TECHNICAL WAXES Ltd. March 24, 1960 [Dec. 24, 1958], No. 41621/58. Class 42 (1). [Also in Group XVII] In a method of heat sealing packages made from a waxed material, a flat heated blade is caused to enter between the wax coated faces to be fastened together, and in close contact therewith, for a length of time sufficient to bring the wax to a tacky condition and, immediately after the withdrawal of the heated blade from between the faces, the faces are pressed together so as to adhere to each other. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 3, flattened cartons are held on a conveyer 6 by clips 7. The cartons are clamped so that a side wall 3 lies on top of the outer face of a side flap 2. Lying in the path of these overlapped portions is a wedgedshaped separator 8 which enters between the overlapped portions and causes one to pass under and one over a relatively thin heated metal blade 9. The portions to be joined together are held in contact with the blade 9 by rollers 12. The heat from blade 9 causes the wax on the two portions to become plasticized to an extent such that after leaving the heater 9 and when the two portions pass between the pressure rollers 13, the two surfaces are bonded together. The rollers 13 are formed as cooling rollers with a coolant fluid passing through them. A similar method may be used for closing filled cartons and a suitable form of carton is shown in Fig. 1.
