Abstract
898,746. Cleaning metals. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Oct. 24, 1958 [Oct. 24, 1957], No. 33295/57. Class 82(2). [Also in Groups VIII and XXXVI] An apparatus for treating e.g. cleaning the surface of a wire or like continuous stock by passing it through a liquid bath comprises a vessel and means for passing the wire or stock through a liquid contained in the vessel, said vessel having a pneumatic gland which is located below the normal surface level of liquid in the vessel and is adapted to permit the passage of the wire or stock from or into the vessel whilst gas supplied to the gland under a positive pressure flows from the gland to the vessel and so restrains liquid in the vessel from leaking through the gland. As shown, wire 10 is drawn vertically from spool 12 through pneumatic gland 13 which conducts it into treating liquid 11 contained in vessel 15, and is then wound-up on spool 14. Gland 13 consists of hollow tube 13a which is supplied with gas via pipe 13b. The ends of tube 13a are nozzleshaped so that the rim of each nozzle is a close yet loose fit to wire 10. Sealing ring 16 forms a connection between gland 13 and the base of vessel 15. In modifications, (a) the gland is movably attached to the vessel so that it may be caused to project into the vessel to different extents, (b) a number of wires are treated simultaneously by using a multi-headed gland, and (c) the apparatus comprises a number of vessels disposed one above the other or in a horizontal row, a series of glands being provided so that the wire may pass through each vessel without deflection. The apparatus may be used for the cleaning of wires, bars, strings and strips. The gas supplied to the gland may be inert (e.g. nitrogen) to prevent oxidation; alternatively, the gas may be heated to dry the wire surface, or the gas may be rendered humid to prevent such drying.
