Abstract
<PICT:0898710/IV (a)/1> An apparatus for treatment by gas or vapour of a polymer in the form of an article of continuous elongated character, e.g. a film, wire or sheet comprises an enclosure, inlet and outlet means for the article into and out of the enclosure and liquid seals associated with said means, a plurality of guide rollers arranged in the enclosure so that the article may be passed around some or all of the rollers in a circuitous path of length depending upon the number of rollers around which the article is passed whereby the duration of treatment may be varied, and at least one baffle between one or more co-adjacent pairs of rollers to constrain the gas or vapour into close relationship with the surface or surfaces of the article. The apparatus finds particular application in the ozonization of polymeric materials in sheet form, e.g. polyethylene, and the subsequent contacting of the ozonized sheet with the vapours of a polymerizable monomer. In one form of apparatus illustrated in Fig. 2 an enclosure 1 is provided with inlets and outlets 2 and 3 for ozone, the film 33 enters the enclosure by way of a liquid seal 13 and is passed by means of rollers 6 through the enclosure which contains baffles 10, 11 and 12 for constraining the ozone into close relationship with the surface of the film. The film leaves the enclosure by way of a sealing arrangement similar to that provided on the inlet side.
