In a guillotine machine for cutting a pile of paper, cardboard and similar material of the kind in which the pile of material is fed intermittently to the cutting knife by a back fence B carried on a carriage which is moved over the surface of a table A by a screwed rod E arranged underneath the table and engaging a nut b carried by a lower part B<SP>2</SP> of the carriage which is connected to the upper part 3<SP>1</SP> of the carriage by a slide G having a part passing through a longitudinal slot a in the table, the slot is covered by a strip C which is secured to the table at the front end a<SP>1</SP> thereof and extends to a position at the back of the table and is anchored at the rear end a<SP>2</SP> thereof by means of a screw a<SP>3</SP> which is such that the strip is raised above the surface of the table, the carriage being provided with a roller d for pressing the strip C downwards so as to lie flush with the table top, or be inserted into the top of the slot, in front of the back fence and with a roller d<SP>1</SP> for raising the strip C slightly above the slot at the rear of the back fence.
