Abstract

Grain, e.g. barley, after steeping in cold water until at least 20%, preferably 20-35%, by weight of water has been absorbed, is drained, transferred to a growing floor, and during the early part of its growth, e.g. the first 3 days, sufficient water is sprayed on to increase the amount absorbed to at least 42%, preferably between 42.5% and 45%. Growth is allowed to continue without further addition of water, and finally the growth is stopped by drying. The water is preferably added to the grain on the growing floor by intermittent spraying during the first two days.
