Abstract

898,461. Cathode-ray tubes. PHlLCO CORPORATION. June 24, 1959 [June 24, 1958], No. 21673/59. Class 39(1). A magnetic shielding and beam centring assembly for a cathoderay tube consists of two magnetic half-discs 42, 44, Fig. 2B, of high permeability material, such as silicon steel, fixed to a conductive disc 40 of, e.g. copper or aluminium, and a rotatable magnet 32 bridging the gap 56 between the members 42 and 44. The assembly may be rotated as a whole, or a second similar assembly may be provided with its gap 56 perpendicular to that of the first assembly. In a modification magnetic half-discs 42, 44, Fig. 5, are provided with ear portions 80, 82, and the rotatable magnet 32 is pivoted near the edge of the magnetic half-discs so as to project through an opening in insulating housing 30. In other modifications disc 40 may be square or hexagonal in shape, and magnet 32 need not be circular and may be replaced by a simple bar magnet. The shielding effect of the assembly in preventing flux fringing of the horizontal and vertical deflection coils as a result of eddy currents induced in the disc 40, and the shunting effect of the magnetic half-discs 42, 44, are described with reference to Specification 898,460.
