Abstract

770,152. Cathode-ray tubes. GENERAL DYNAMICS CORPORATION. Jan. 26, 1953 [July 1, 1952; July 12, 1952], No. 2166/53. Class 39(1). [Also in Group XL(c)] A cathode-ray tube for directly displaying letters or characters comprises a solid member 14, Fig. 1, provided with linear arranged openings shaped like the letters or characters, e.g. as in Fig. 2 and the beam is directed through a selected opening and to a selected location on the screen 12 by sets of deflection plates 16, 18 and 20, 22. In another embodiment both sets of plates precede the member 14. An additional set of plates may be provided to direct the beam normally to the member 14. The member 14 is supported by a cylinder 24 which may be of conductive material and serve also to shield the beam. The plates 20, 22 may be replaced by an electromagnetic system comprising a pair of horizontal deflection coils 74, 76, Fig. 6, lying at right angles to one another, and a similar pair of vertical deflection coils 78, 80. The plates 16, 18 may also be replaced by an electromagnetic system. In a P.P.I. system (see Group XL(c)) the beam is swept radially across the screen by a rotatable coil assembly, which may be similar to that of Fig. 6. The member 14, Fig. 1, may be of glass, or of conductive material and tied to a particular potential. Specification 770,151 is referred to.
