Abstract

898,173. Cutting by fusion. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. March 3, 1961 [March 8, 1960], No. 8162/60. Class 83 (4). In a float control mechanism for a flamecutting machine, the up-and-down movement of a cutting head 12 turns a wheel 16 coacting with a free-wheel device 21, 22 which drives the wheel 16 only in a direction for raising the head, by means of a shaft 19 associated with a brake mechanism for locking the shaft at least against movement in a direction to lower the head. Two or more cutting heads 12 slidable vertically in brackets 11 secured to a beam 10 of a multihead cutting machine, are connected by chains 15 to counterweights 13. Each head carries a skid or roller 18 which rides on the surface of the workpiece to be cut for maintaining the correct height of the burner. The chains pass over sprockets 16 freely rotatable on shaft 19 and carrying pawls 21 co-operating with ratchet wheels 22 fast with the shaft. The latter is turned by a hand wheel 23, or by a remotely controlled electric motor, for the raising or controlled lowering of all the heads and carries a brake drum 24 co-operating with a brake band 25 fastened to a weighted lever 26. A separate free wheel device, acting in the opposite direction to the devices 21, 22, may be arranged between the brake drum 24 and shaft 19 whereby the heads 12 can be raised by the hand wheel 23 without releasing the brake. The heads may be counterbalanced by fluid cylinders instead of counterweights.
