Abstract
Films of thermoplastic, at least partially crystalline, polyolefins are made on a calender by a process comprising:- (a) heating the surfaces of all the rolls of the calender and keeping them at a temperature above the crystalline melting point of the polyolefin, (b) adjusting the calender rolls so that the speed of each rolls is at least 1,1 times the speed of the preceding roll and the speed ratio between the first and the last roll is at least 1:1,5 and preferably at least 1:2, and (c) adjusting the temperature of the surfaces of the rolls and the speed of the rolls to one another so that the kneading mass of the polyolefin accumulating in front of the slits between the rolls rotates within itself. The polyolefin may be a high-density polyethylene, p polypropylene, a copolymer of ethylene and propylene, a mixture of polyethylene and polypropylene or a mixture of low-density and high-density polyethylenes, and may be applied to the centre of the first calender roll in a width smaller than the available width of said roll. The film leaving the calender may be stretched in at least one direction, at a temperature above or below its crystalline melting point, as for example on rolls having a vulcanized hard rubber coating. After leaving the calender the film may be cooled, either by cold air or by cooled rolls. Specifications 799,392 and 799,823 are referred to.
