Abstract
Films and like sheet materials having a reticular or lattice-like structure and consisting of amorphous or partially crystalline synthetic organic polymeric thermoplastic materials are made by means of the technique used in the manufacture of expanded metal, a film of the material being provided by cutting or punching with slots arranged in parallel rows, the slots of each row being arranged in staggered relation to those of adjacent rows, and the slotted film being then stretched at an elevated temperature which, when the material is partially crystalline, is within the range of the crystalline melting point of the material to 50 DEG C. below this melting point, and, when the material is amorphous, is within the temperature range of the viscoelastic state of the material, either at right angles to the slots or in a direction parallel to the slots or in both directions to such an extent that the linear dimension of the sheet in the stretching direction after the stretching operation is between three and over ten times the dimension before stretching. The slotted film may be stretched in both directions simultaneously or sequentially. The film material may be a polyethylene, a polypropylene, or an ethylenepropylene copolymer, in each case made by the low-pressure process. Alternatively it may be polyvinyl chloride or polystyrene, provided that the slotted film is produced at an elevated temperature prior to the hot stretching step.
