Abstract
1,171,219. Tapes of polyolefin blends. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 11 Dec., 1968 [9 Nov., 1967; 19 Jan., 1968], Nos. 51103/67 and 3024/68. Heading B5B. A polyolefin tape is produced from a blend comprising 50-90% of a crystallizable poly-α- olefin and 10-50% of any other polyolefin by melt extrusion of a relatively wide film, which is then drawn in the direction of extrusion at a temperature below the crystallite m.p. of the poly-α-olefin, said film being slit into a plurality of tapes before or after said drawing. The film may be flat or tubular, and may also be drawn transversely and/or longitudinally while above its crystallite m.pt. Suitably the "crystallite drawing" is at a temperature not more than 60‹ C. below the crystallite m.pt., e.g. from 110 -170‹ C. in the case of polypropylene, and the draw ratio is at least 7:1. A blend of polypropylene and polyethylene is exemplified; other suitable polymers are listed.
