Abstract

Films of linear crystalline high molecular weight polymers of alpha-olefins are made by extruding a sheet of polymer at least 100 microns thick at 200 DEG -350 DEG C., cooling the extruded sheet and then stretching the sheet in a longitudinal or transverse direction with a ratio of 1 : 2 to 1 : 16 and in a direction at right angles to the first stretching direction with a ratio of from 1 : 3 to 1 : 20, the stretching operations being effected at 50 DEG -170 DEG C. Preferably the polymer is polypropylene of intrinsic viscosity 1,5-6 (especially 2,5-4), as determined in tetrahydronaphthalene at 135 DEG C., and an isotactic content of at least 70% (especially 85 DEG -98%). The first stretching is desirably longitudinal and in a ratio of 1 : 3,5 to 1 : 9. Stretching in the direction at right angles to the first stretching is preferably effected at a ratio of 1 : 5 to 1 : 10. Stretching in one direction may be carried out in more than one stage, and stretching in the direction at right angles to the direction of this multi-stage stretching may be effected in stages between the stages of the multi-stage stretching. Stretching may be effected at from 100 DEG -140 DEG C., and if desired the sheet may be pre-heated prior to stretching. After stretching, the film may be stabilized at from 50 DEG -150 DEG C., desirably from 80 DEG -130 DEG C.
