897,557. Alternators; cooling dynamoelectric machines. HOUCHIN Ltd., and CHAPMAN, R. A. Sept. 29, 1960 [June 29, 1959], No. 22210/59. Class 35. In a D.C. excited, brushless alternator, excited from an exciter EXC through rectifiers rotating with the rotor, the exciting leads are carried to the alternator rotor 15 through duct 59 in the shaft, and the rectifiers RRA are located in a ventilated cooling chamber 60 at one end of the machine. The rectifiers may be of the silicon or germanium type. As shown in Fig. 3, the rectifier carrier consists of two aluminium mounting rings 30 having three equiangularly-spaced arms 31 radiating from a hub 32, mounted on shaft 33, each pair of arms of the rings being bolted together by screws 42 which also serve as input terminals to the diodes. Each pair of rectifiers 19a, 20a, &c. is mounted in a separate housing carried on the inner periphery of a ring 30 and the D.C. output terminals 21A, 21B are flanges 51 with screws 52 on the hub 32 of the ring. The cooling chamber 61 is provided with cooling air inlets 62 and the rings may be provided with fins to assist cooling.
