Abstract

897,417. Drying air; removing liquid particles from gases. GENERAL DYNAMICS CORPORATION. April 26, 1960 [April 29, 1959], No. 14615/60. Classes 34(1) and 123(3) An impingement-type moisture eliminator 12, Fig. 1, comprises rows of vertical and laterally spaced streamlined impingement rods 15, each having in cross-section a rounded front and tapered rear to the surfaces of which are secured, e.g. by glueing, water absorbent material, e.g. cotton cloth or wick material 16, on which water droplets, from impinging moisture-laden air, form adherent films of water which drain by gravity from the rods. As shown the upper ends of the rods are fastened to the top wall of a threesided housing 13 connected at its lower end to a collecting chamber 14 provided with a drain tube 19, the housing 13 being mounted on the outlet of a cooling or refrigeration unit 10 incorporating cooling coils and baffles 11. Where the rods pass through openings 21 in the roof of the chamber 14, sleeves 20 of absorbent material are joined to the rods, the material readily saturating to isolate the chamber from the air stream passing through the eliminator. The rods of the rows may be staggered and those in the row adjacent the unit 10 may be wider than those of other rows and also more numerous than the rods of the other rows. The lower ends of the rods are attached to supports 17 fastened across the floor 18 of the chamber 14.
