Abstract

897,264. Variable-speed gear. EBERT, H. July 14, 1958 [Aug. 14, 1957], No. 22529/57. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] A variable-speed gear has the torque transmitted partly through an epicyclic gear and partly through a hydrostatic torque converter having pump and motor parts of the swash-plate type constructed with the motor part formed by at least two motors, and the pump part constituted by one or more pumps, the whole being arranged so that the gear may fit into a confined space and thus be suitable for use in the transmission of a private car. In one embodiment the gear comprises a pump 19 having a cylinder drum 18 fast with a driving- shaft 15 and having axial pistons reciprocated by a swash-plate 21 and supplying liquid through passages in a stationary valve-plate 17 to motors 29, 30 having cylinder drums fast with an output shaft 12. The swash-plates of the pump and motors are pivoted in a stationary housing 7 and are adjustable simultaneously to vary the transmission ratio by an hydraulic motor 31 having a stationary piston 32 and a moving cylinder 33 connected to members having cam slots co-operating with pins connected to the swash-plates. An input shaft 1 has a sun gear 2 meshing with planet pinions 3 freely mounted on shafts 9 in a carrier 10. Pinions 3 mesh with a stationary ring-gear 4, and a second set of planet pinions 8 are freely mounted on shafts 9 and mesh with a stun gear 11 on the output shaft and with a ring gear 13 which has external teeth meshing with a pinion 14 on the pump driving-shaft 15. In a modification the stationary ring-gear 4 and the second set of planetary pinions 8 are dispensed with, the planet pinions 3 mesh with the input stun and with a ring gear having external teeth meshing with a pinion on the pump drive shaft, and the planet carrier is fast with the output shaft to which the motor shafts are geared.
