Abstract

1,217,862. Gearing. H. EBERT. 14 Oct., 1968 [20 Oct., 1967], No. 47756/67. Heading F2D. An infinitely variable transmission has an input shaft 10, forward and reverse clutches 15, 21, respectively, a driving shaft 17 fast with a power take-off shaft 24, and an output sleeve 25 which is attached to a planet carrier 26. When the transmission is applied to a tractor which is required to move either forwards or in reverse a clutch 43 is engaged and clutch 40 is disengaged, swash-plate 34 is at maximum inclination and swash-plate 31 at zero inclination. If the forward drive clutch 15 is engaged the shaft 17 and sunwheel 23 rotate clockwise whilst output sleeve 25, carrier 26 and the unit 33 are stationary. Annulus 28 and unit 30 rotate anticlockwise at half the speed of shaft 17. Since swash-plate 31 is at zero inclination no oil is pumped to unit 33. As the inclination of swash-plate 31 is increased unit 30 absorbs torque and oil is pumped to unit 33 which transmits torque to the output sleeve 25 via sleeve 32, pinion 36, wheel 37 shaft 38, clutch 43, pinion 41 and wheel 42. As a result the output shaft rotates clockwise at <SP>1</SP>/ 9 th the speed of shaft 17. The inclination of swash-plate 34 is now reduced until when its angle becomes zero hydraulic lock occurs and the output sleeve 25 is mechanically driven at 1/3 the speed of shaft 17. If a higher output speed is required clutch 40 is engaged and clutch 43 disengaged. The unit 33 now rotates at the same speed as the shaft 17 and functions as a pump whilst the unit 30 functions as a motor. As the inclination of swash-plate 34 increases the torque transmitted by the unit 30 increases. The epicyclic gear acts as a speed splitter and when the swashplate 34 is at maximum inclination the output shaft speed is equal to the driving shaft speed. Downward changes in gear ratio are effected by reversing the sequence of operations. Each of the units 30, 33 may be replaced by a bank of two or more such units, the shaft 17 passing through one unit in each bank. The gear 20 may mesh directly with gear 16 to provide reverse drive.
