Class 100(2) Material is removed from the surface of bodies, e.g. of metal, in a single brief operation by supporting the body or a rigid support, securing it against horizontal displacement so that it is free to perform vertical rising movements, forcing a flat die with rib-type projections on its operative face against the surface of the body, and causing the body to vibrate in a substantially vertical movement, so that material is removed by a cutting operation. A watch part 10 to be provided with miniature lettering is placed on a support 11 and secured against horizontal displacement by stops 12, 13, 14. A die 15 having on its plate 16 raised lettering formed in ribs of triangular cross-section with an apex angle of 40 to 70 degrees is brought into contact with the part 10 and vibrated vertically at ultrasonic frequency. causing vertical vibrations of the part 10. If the part 10 is rigid, the stops leave a slight clearance to allow vertical movement as a whole. Otherwise, the part is clamped and the central part vibrates. The ribs may be formed in the support, while the upper die is replaced by a flat plunger. Cutting may be facilitated by a liquid jet containing diamond dust. The stops may be replaced by a continuous stop rim, or the part 10 may be held in a recess in the support 11.
