Abstract

Materials liable to yellow when bleached with an alkali-metal monopersulphate in the presence of manganese ions, e.g. cotton fabrics, are bleached in the presence of manganese ions with an alkali-metal monopersulphate and a perhydrate which, when added to water, liberates hydrogen peroxide, the ratio of the active oxygen content of the monopersulphate to that of the perhydrate being between 3 : 1 and 30 : 1, whereby the yellowing is substantially decreased or eliminated. The alkali metal monopersulphate may be "Oxane", a mixture of KHSO5, KHSO4 and K2SO4 in the molar proportions of 2 : 1 : 1. Specified perhydrates are those formed from hydrogen peroxide aod sodium borate, e.g. sodium perborate tetrahydrate, NaBO2.H2O2.3H2O, and sodium borate perhydrate, NaBO2.H2O2, aluminium sulphate, urea, sodium acetate, sodium silicate, ammonium carbamate or pyrophosphates. The treating composition may also contain sodium sulphate, sodium metasilicate sodium carbonate and tetra-sodium pyrophosphate. Specifications 727,419, 797,701 and U.S.A.
