Abstract

The invention comprises molecular compounds of benzoic anhydride with urea or with urea and hydrogen peroxide and a method for preparing them by causing the compounds to crystallize together in the same crystal lattice. The benzoic anhydride-urea compound may be converted to perbenzoic acid (e.g. with sodium perborate) more readily than benzoic anhydride itself (Example 7).ALSO:Bleaching compositions comprise (a) a solid source of active oxygen and a molecular compound of benzoic anhydride and urea, or (b) a molecular compound of benzoic anhydride, urea and hydrogen peroxide, and optionally a solid source of active oxygen. Said oxygen source is preferably sodium perborate, sodium percarbonate or a ureahydrogen peroxide addition compound; it may also be in general, a percarbonate, perpyrophosphate, persulphate mineral peroxide or organic hydrogen peroxide addition compound. The compositions may be used to bleach textile fibres made from natural or natural polymer or synthetic polymer man-made fibres.
