Abstract

895,773. Colour television tubes. SYLVANIA-THORN COLOUR TELEVISION LABORATORIES Ltd. Oct. 19, 1959 [Sept. 17, 1958], No. 29784/58. Class 39(1). In a colour television receiver tube having a multi-colour strip screen, the screen includes a layer of photo-emissive material selectively responsive only to certain of the strips which act as indexing strips. The emitted electrons pass to a collecting coating on the wall of the tube and the indexing signal is derived directly from this coating or from an aluminium coating on the screen, or indirectly from the coating on the tube wall by coupling to an exterior overlying coating. In Fig. 1 the screen includes colour strips R, G, B, guard strips A of a phosphor which does not emit light, a transparent aluminium layer 11 and the photo-emissive layer 12. The exciting radiation for the photo-emissive layer may be the light emitted by one of the colour strips, or a phosphor emitting the exciting radiation may be mixed with the phosphor of certain of the strips R, G, B or A. The indexing strips may emit ultra-violet radiation, the photoemissive layer being responsive only to this radiation. Alternatively, or in addition, a colour filter passing only the desired radiation may be provided between the phosphor strips and the photo-emissive layer. The colour strips may be of phosphors having a long afterglow compared with the indexing strips so that the colour strips produce a negligible effect. The indexing strips may be spaced by distances not equal to those between the groups of colour strips, as described in Specification 895,772, so that the frequencies generated by scanning the colour and indexing strips respectively are different. In Fig. 3 a layer 11<SP>1</SP> of a material, e.g. aluminium, opaque to the light emitted by the colour strips is applied over the colour phosphor strips R, G, B. The indexing strips 1 are applied over the aluminium layer 11<SP>1</SP> and finally the photo-emissive layer 12 is applied. The photo-emissive layer may be continuous or applied in strips over the indexing strips.
