Abstract
An activated but physically substantially undergraded cellulosic textile material capable of taking part in a graft reaction with a graftable chemical substance is produced by subjecting the material to suitable ionizing electromagnetic radiation such as X-rays or gamma rays at a dosage of from 103 to 107 Roentgen. Substances which may be grafted on to the activated material include compounds incapable of polymerization such as quaternary ammonium compounds, phenols, silicones, dyes, or organo-metallic compounds such as tributyl tin oxide, phenyl mercury metaborate or tributyl tin acetate, polymers such as polyethylene, a polymethacrylate or polyvinyl chloride, softeners such as the triethanolamine salt of oleylsarcoside, cetyldimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride, stearyl triethanolamine and stearyl-ethylenediamine formate, or polymerizable monomers such as an acrylate or methacrylate, acrylamide, styrene, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, ethylene, butadiene or isoprene or mixtures thereof. Polymerization of the monomer may be affected with the aid of a redox system which may be applied simultaneously with the monomer or previously, polymerization being assisted by heating. Prior to irradiation the textile material may be treated with a chemical substance such as an acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic or cinnamic ester, an allyl ether, acrylonitrile, an ethylene imine compound, or an o-, m- or p-substituted benzene carboxylic acid or alcohol or a derivative thereof such as p-isopropyl benzoyl chloride. The cellulosic material may be protected against excessive decomposition by irradiation by treatment with cysteine, cystine, pyrogeallol or methane sulphonyl chloride prior to irradiation.
