Abstract

895,318. Wrenches. TUCKER & BATT Ltd., and FORD, A. M. Aug. 31, 1960 [Aug. 31, 1959], No. 29693/59. Class 61. In a torque indicating spanner a bending movement caused between opposite ends upon loading is utilized to move a wiper contact over one or more resistances in an electrical circuit including an indicator, e.g. an ammeter. As shown in Fig. 1 (Provisional Specification) the head 5 of a spanner is connected by a shank 6 to a handle 7, the shank having a degree of flexibility due to reduction in its cross-sectional area relative to the head and handle so that when loading is applied there is a tendency for the shank to assume an arcuate shape. The shank has secured thereto a wiper blade 8 which upon application of the bending movement is moved in one direction or the other to slide over one or other of a pair of resistances 9 which are secured to the casing 10 of the spanner. Cables 17 from each resistance 9 extend through passages provided in a spacing member to a source of electric battery in circuit with an ammeter. The circuit of the meter may take the form of valve voltmeter, cathode tube indicator, neon indicator or audible indicator. In a modification, Fig. 1, the handle 7 is formed in two parts connected by bolts to form a casing. The head 5 is positioned between extensions of the handle by a stud 25 which extends through slots 25a and allows sliding movement between the head and handle. A rubber sleeve 26 surrounds the end of the handle. The enlarged end of the stem part 20 of the shank is secured to the handle 7 by screw studs. The resistances 9 are secured to the enlarged end of the stem. The blade together with the wiper contact is secured to the under side of the stem 20. The head 5 is slit centrally to receive a plate which divides the head into two parts presenting nut sockets of different dimensions.
