Abstract

The torque wrench provides an indication (deformation) during operation, e.g. mounting an aerial, that a desired torque setting has been reached, thereby preventing damage of the aerial or the surface on which it is mounted. The wrench comprises a work-engaging portion 11 and a handle 12 having a weakened section 13 formed by providing slots 14, 15 therein. The point at which deformation occurs is determined by the length of each slot, the distance between slots, and the material used. When formed of plastic, the torque wrench provides a very inexpensive disposable tool. If an elastic material such as metal is used, however, the torque wrench may be used a number of times. <IMAGE>

Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO THE FITTING OF AERIALS The present invention relates to the fitting of apparatus such as aerials and more particularly to a torque wrench which will provide a torque indication in an inexpensive manner so that apparatus such as an aerial can be mounted without damaging either the aerial or the surface on which it is mounted.
The present invention provides a torque wrench comprising a work-piece engaging portion and a lever portion provided with a weakened section designed to deform at a desired torque setting.
Preferably, the weakened section is formed by one or more slots in the lever portion.
The present invention will be more readily understood from the following description of embodiments thereof, given by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 shows a plan view of a first embodiment of the present invention: and Fig. 2 shows a plan view of a second embodiment of the present invention.
As shown in Fig. 1, a torque wrench 10 comprises a work-piece engaging portion 11 and a lever portion 12 for applying torque to the portion 11. Between the work-piece engaging portion 11 and the lever portion 12 is disposed a weakened section 13 formed by providing two slots 14, 15 each extending from one side of the lever portion towards the other side but in opposite directions. The slots are displaced along the length of the lever to form therebetween the weakened section 13.
The level of torque at which deformation of the weakened section will occur is determined by the distance each slot extends from the side of the lever, the distance between the slots, and the material used. Preferably, the wrench is made of plastics material.
Various modifications can be made to the basic arrangement shown in Fig. 1. For example, a single slot may be provided. Alternatively, and as shown in Fig. 2 the slot or slots 17, 18 can be disposed at an angle to the length of the lever rather than extending at right angles to the length of the lever as shown in Fig. 1.
The weakened section of the lever portion may alternatively comprise a part of the lever portion whose cross-sectional area is significantly less than that of the remainder of the lever portion, for example by the formation of a neck within the weakened section.
The work-piece engaging portion can take any one of a number of different shapes e.g. the ring shape shown in Fig. 1 or the open-ended shape shown in Fig. 2 or any other shape depending of the work-piece.
The above constructions provide a torque wrench of simple construction to enable a indication of a single torque setting to be achieved. When made of plastics material, the wrench may only be used accurately once but if made of a different material e.g.
metal, the elasticity of the material may enable the wrench to be used a number of times.
As a further alternative, the weakened section 13, or the weakened section 13 and the work-piece engaging portion 11 may be formed of a different material or have a different composition to the lever portion. These components may, for example, be assembled by means of an attachment mechanism, or by means of co-operating screw threads. In this way it is possible for a single lever portion 12 and/or work-piece engaging portion 11 to be used with a number of detachable and disposable weakened sections 13.

Claims (11)

1. A torque wrench comprising a work-piece engaging portion and a lever portion, the lever portion provided with a weakened section which is designed to deform when the torque to which the wrench is subject reaches a desired torque setting.
2. The torque wrench according to claim 1, wherein: the composition of said weakened section of the lever portion differs from that of the remainder of the lever portion
3. The torque wrench according to claim 1 or 2, wherein: said weakened section of the lever portion has a lesser cross-sectional area than the remainder of the lever portion.
4. The torque wrench according to claim 3, wherein: the weakened section of the lever portion is formed by providing a number of slots in the lever portion.
5. The torque wrench according to claim 4, wherein: one or more of the slots extended perpendicularly to the sides of the lever portion and from opposite sides there of alternately, each slot extending part-way between one side of the lever portion and the other.
6. The torque wrench according to claim 4, wherein: the slots extend from the sides of the lever portion and make acute angles therewith.
7. The torque wrench according to any of the preceding claims, wherein: the work-piece engaging portion is substantially ring-shaped and includes a plurality of plane working surfaces arranged in a closed formation.
8. The torque wrench according to any of claims 1 to 6, wherein: the work-piece engaging portion is substantially U-shaped and includes a plurality of plane working surfaces arranged in an open formation.
9. The torque wrench according to any of the preceding claims, wherein: the torque wrench is formed of a plastic material of pre-determined mechanical properties.
10. The torque wrench according to any of claims 1 to 8 wherein: the torque wrench is formed of a metal or alloy of a pre-determined mechanical properties.
11. The torque wrench substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing.
