Abstract
Distillation apparatus comprises an evaporation chamber 1 and a condensation chamber 2 connected by ducts to form a closed circuit around which a gas is circulated by a fan 3 so that it passes in the same direction through each chamber, as shown by the arrows; the evaporation chamber also carries tubes 4 through which a heating fluid is passed and over which distilland is distributed from a sump 8 by way of a pump 6 and distributer 5, while the condensation chamber carries tubes 12 through which a cooling fluid is <PICT:0894936/III/1> passed and over which distillate is distributed from a sump 13 by way of a pump 14 and distributer 16. The apparatus may be applied to the distillation of sea-water, and in that case the fan 3 is caused to circulate air through the apparatus, sea-water is supplied to the sump 8, suitably at such a rate that the density of the liquid in the sump is about twice that of sea-water, low-pressure steam or water which has been used for cooling engines, e.g. a ship's engines, is passed through the tubes 4, sea-water is passed through the tubes 12, and distilled water is withdrawn from the sump 13. The apparatus may be applied also to the distillation of spent lubricating oils, but in this case the gas circulated by the fan 3 should be an inert gas, to avoid explosion. According to the Provisional Specification the conduits connecting the chambers 1 and 2 may contain plates, to remove entrained liquid from the circulating gas.
