Abstract

894,730. Measuring gravitational forces. LUNDBERG, H. T. F. Nov. 16, 1959, No. 38824/59. Class 97(3). An instrument for measuring derivatives of the earth's gravitational field comprises at least two equal masses 15, 22, Fig. 1, preferably made of gold or silver and having a weight between one and one hundred grams, connected by frameworks to opposite ends of a flexible steel link 17 and also to pivots formed by leaf springs 6, 7, and 8, 9 respectively, so that the tendency of masses 15, 22 to move about the pivots due to the normal force of gravity acts in opposite directions and with equal force on link 17 and is cancelled out, whereas the gradient of the vertical component of the gravitational field causes slight movement of the masses about the axes and may be measured or recorded by an element 25 connected in circuit with a capacitance bridge. The supporting blocks 2, 3 fixed to the wall of an evacuated chamber 1, pivotally support members 10, 12, by means of the horizontal and vertical leaf springs 6, 7, 8, 9. Attached to members 10, 12 are V-shaped frames 14, 19, connecting them to masses 15, 22, and V-shaped frames 16, 21, connecting them to opposite ends of link 17, single bars 18, 20, being provided between masses 15, 22, and opposite ends of link 17. In a modification, Fig. 3, similar masses and frameworks are provided in the upper and lower portions of the chamber 1 connected to opposite ends of links 33, 34, the other ends being connected by V-shaped arms 51, 52, to a member 50 pivoted by leaf springs 53, 54, to a fixed support 28, and also by single bars 48, 49, to a mass 47 which is of the same composition as masses 31, 32 but is twice their weight. The arrangement is such that the effect of the earth's gravitational field and the first derivative of the vertical gravity component are cancelled out, the movement of mass 47 relative to the electrode 56, which measures or records such movement, being due to the second derivative of the vertical gravity component.
